Welcome to La Yerbería
La Yerbería is a 10 week course with SanArte’s Beto DeLeón, exploring traditional medicine and its cultural connections. In this program, we will cover an introduction to medicine making, utilize creative elements and documentation skills to explore the roots and strategies of herbalism today.
Course TUITION includes workbook, supplies, and medicinal plants.
This course is a 55 hour program open to BIPOC (Black, iNDIGENOUS, people of color)
PARTICIPANTS with a focus on stories and medicine from
what is now known as Texas, the gulf south and México.

Beto (they/he) is a Lipan Apache/Xicano indigequeer herbalist, community organizer and traditional ecologist. Originally from the rural Gulf Coast, they connected with traditional herbalism of their ancestral lands of South Texas/México. They first learned plant identification as a youth interested in the wetland ecology of their home toWn, over time this became a desire to better understand their culture, history and community through connection with plants and defense of the land.
Their plant, food and herbal SKILLS haVE spanned over 25 years of study & practice including their role as Environmental Justice Coordinator at Southwest Workers Union, their certification at the 2018 Indigenous Sustainable Communities Design Course in Tesuque Pueblo, NM, presenting on indigenous food ways of the Rio Grande delta at the 2015 Native Food Symposium. as an organizing member of SanArte Healing & Cultura Collective they are herbalist educator for the la Yerbería cohort & circulo de remedios herbal gathering, danzante with Kalpulli Ameyaltonal and currently working on their first book. Beto's focus is to continue offering medicine and creating spaces for queer people to heal, organize and thrive.

FOLKS WITH MORE EXPERIENCE MAY ALREADY HAVE A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF TECHNIQUES BUT THE CULTURAL COMPONENTS ARE A UNIQUE WAY OF GROUNDING OUR WORK AND BUILDING TRUST WITH COMMUNITY. Q: CAN I BRING MY CHILDREN OR A FRIEND?

A: CLASSES WILL BE IN PERSON IN SAN ANTONIO ONLY, IF YOU LIVE IN ANOTHER COMMUNITY AND WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE TRAVEL/LODGING WILL BE COVERED BY PARTICIPANT. WE CANNOT COVER TRAVEL COSTS EITHER LOCALLY OR OUT OF TOWN.
Q: I CAN NOT COMMIT TO 10 WEEKS, CAN I TAKE INDIVIDUAL CLASSES SEPARATELY?
A: NO, CLASSWORK IS CONTINUOUS AND MISSING CLASSES WILL IMPACT OVERALL PROGRAM KNOWLEDGE SHARE.

A: CLASES WILL BE INDOORS/OUTDOORS AS WEATHER PERMITS, WE ASK THAT EVERYONE WEAR A MASK INDOORS, OUTDOOR SPACES WILL BE MASK OPTIONAL. IF YOU HAVE POTENTIALLY BEEN EXPOSED TO COVID DURING THE PROGRAM'S DURATION, PLEASE CONTACT FACILITATOR ASAP.

A: THIS COHORT IS AN INTIMATE CIRCLE OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE WITH VARIED EXPERIENCES AND LEVELS OF MEDICINE MAKING SKILLS, WE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO PARTICIPATE IN A SPIRIT OF COMPASSION, RESPECT AND SOLIDARITY.
